
Crime at Seattle’s light rail stations are causing concerns among residents. A person was fatally shot and a second person injured outside the Tukwila stop. Those frequently riding the train are dealing with the perception of increased crime and danger. A 62-year-old woman was brutally beaten earlier this month.
Riders are saying things are happening that is causing them fear. Some feel that it’s regular at some stops. Guns being pulled on riders as well as drug sales are part of the normal some riders expect to see.
The fatal shooting earlier this month caused concerns among residents. Authorities over the Sound Transit believe that the concerns are not based in facts. The agency states that data shows an overall safe environment for its passengers.
Perception is real however, the agency provided information that shows that in 2022 there have been 27 reported assaults. The rail averages 1.6 million riders a month. Some feel that security can do a much better job.
On March 2, surveillance video showed suspect Alexander Jay go onto an escalator at the light rail station on South Jackson Street and 5th Avenue and randomly attacked a woman walking up the stairs. He allegedly pushed the 62-year-old down the stairs twice then kicked her several times. The woman received three broken ribs and a broken clavicle.
